Norbert W. Hinterberger was born in Upper Austria in 1949 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Vienna. From 1979 to 1993, he worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Linz. In 1993, he became a Professor in the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, a position he still holds today. He lives in Berlin, Weimar, Linz and at the mouth of the Amazon near Belém.
He had held or participated in exhibitions at museums and cultural institutes in Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Leipzig, Kassel, Essen, Augsburg, Osnabrück, Erfurt, Weimar, Gotha, Gera, Vienna, Graz, Linz, Villach, Freistadt, Gmunden, Grein, Pilsen, Zagreb, Rome, Naples, Modena, Vicenza, Zurich, Basle, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Stockholm, Dublin, Valencia, Vilnius, Kaunas, Moscow, Ramle, Ofakim, Perth, Negombo, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Among numerous other projects, he has helped design exhibitions at the German Museum of Hygiene in Dresden (“Tracing the Odyssey of Life”) and the Jewish Museum in Berlin (“Koscher & Co”).
