"Una apis nulla apis" (Latin proverb)
Beekeeping, Apiculture or Apidology belonged to the early education issues at the former Royal Prussian Academy of Agriculture at Bonn-Poppelsdorf. Its library, the predecessor of ZB MED in Bonn, gathered literature on the subject from early on.
In particular, late in 1895, the library acquired the collection of about 200 titles of Bonn apidologist August Pollmann.
Pollmann's collection includes numerous, partly very rare German and foreign language books, also seven scientific bee-journals, including the journal of the Westphalian-Rhenish Association for Bee and Silk Culture, edited by him from 1879-1885.
Culture and breeding of the bee - one of the main farm animals - and the importance of bee products in nutrition and medicine reflect, on the one hand, very well the range of subjects ZB MED represents. On the other hand, with the digitization of Pollmann's collection ZB MED would like to contribute to research on the current, almost global problem of "bee death", research which is also an European Union and several German federal states' pilot project (EuBiMo).
At first, ZB MED - Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences has digitized titles from the former Pollmann collection. Now, other appropiate works both from our own and from foreign stocks will follow, e.g. from the Bavarian Regional Office for Viticulture and Horticulture at Veitshöchheim.
